What Are the Common Nissan Dashboard Lights?

If you drive a Nissan, you’ve probably noticed that your dashboard has a lot of light-up symbols on it. Some of these are easy enough to interpret–the oil lamp, for example, means that you need to get your oil changed–but others are a bit more arcane. Since no vehicle runs perfectly all the time, chances are you’re going to see one or two of these lights over the course of your rides, so it’s a good idea to know what the most common symbols mean. The service team at Kline Nissan has put together a guide to some of the common Nissan warning lights and information symbols you may see on your dashboard – check it out!

Common Nissan Dashboard Warning Lights

While some of these lights are specifically designed to signal you to a problem with your vehicle, not all of them are Nissan warning lights – some of them are simply designed to inform you of your car’s status, such as the headlights being turned on, or the trunk is open. We’ve split this guide into four sections: engine lights, brake system lights, safety, and informative lights, and tire-related lights. Check it out:

Engine Warning Lights

  • Coolant Temp Warning: If there’s something wrong with your coolant system, such as a leak or improper coolant levels, you’ll see this light illuminate.
  • Service Vehicle: This light indicates an electrical problem with your vehicle that you should get checked out at Kline Nissan as soon as possible.
  • Reduced Power Warning: This light means that there your engine could be malfunctioning and your vehicle is running at low power–get to a service center right away to get your engine fixed.

Brake System Warning Lights

  • Brake System: You’ll see this light if there’s any kind of problem with your brakes, including low fluid levels or a malfunctioning anti-lock braking system (ABS).
  • Traction Control or ESP: This isn’t a warning light–it simply means that your vehicle has engaged its electronic stability system (if it’s equipped with one).

Safety & Informative Warning Lights

  • Security Alert: If you’ve left a door ajar or your ignition switch is locked, this symbol will light up to inform you.
  • Fog Lamp: As the name suggests, this light means that your fog lamps (also called your brights) are turned on.
  • Airbag Fault: Make a service appointment right away if you see this light since it means there’s a problem with your airbags.
  • Washer Fluid Reminder: This light means that you’re running low on windshield washer fluid and should get it refilled.
  • Cruise Control: This light will stay on as long as your vehicle’s cruise control system is engaged.

Tire Warning Lights

  • Tire Pressure Warning Light: If there’s an issue with your tire pressure rating, such as being overfilled or underfilled, your TPMS will detect it and alert you with this light.
